Installing Project 2003 over Project 2002?

Pat

I'm planning to install Project 2003 Std on my computer (I currently have
the 2002 Pro version installed). Should I remove Project 2002 before doing
this? Any problem keeping both on the same system (at least for while) if I
want?

Thanks for the help.

Hi Pat,

I currently run Project 2003 and Project 2002 on the same computer. I
installed 2003 in a separate directory and the only thing I notice is that
some of the add-ins (compare project versions for example) for Project 2002
don't run, but they run fine in 2003.

Make sure you install the service pack for 2003 -- it is up to SP-2.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Pat,
You might get differing opinions on this, but from my experience you
shouldn't have any problem. Just make sure you tell the Project 2003
installer that you want to keep earlier versions when it asks. I run
Project 98, Project 2000, and Project 2003 (standard or pro) under
Windows XP Home and have experienced no major issues.

Thanks Julie and John for the replies. I have one other question.

I currently have some custom macros (global) and a few other customizations
(in toolbars, etc) I created in MSP 2002. Is there a way to bring these
over to MSP 2003? This is really the only reason I want to MSP 2002 around,
otherwise I would just remove it before installing MSP 2003 (I don't think
there is any need to keep both, is there? Aren't these two very similar?).

Thanks again, -Pat

Pat,
It is very easy to transfer custom settings and macros. Simply create a
new file in Project 2002 (it can be a blank file) and use the Organizer
to transfer all your custom items to the file. Then open that file in
Project 2003 and again use the Organizer to transfer the custom items to
the 2003 Global. For back up I recommend periodically saving your Global
file to another partition on your hard drive or better still, to some
type of removable medium. That way, if you have a major disaster, you
can easily re-instate your custom settings.

Unless you have a need to run more than one version, (I do as an MVP so
I can relate to user's posts), then no, there probably is not a
compelling reason to keep both versions installed. Project 2000 through
2003 are all fully compatible, the main difference is that each new
version added more functionality.
