Installing Project Server 2003

J

John Shaw

We require to give up to five people in our organisation access to projects
created by others. We had intended to use project server for this but from
reading some of the planning documentation it would appear that you must have
both an SQL server and Sharepoint installed in the organisation. Is this the
case or can you use the client server setup to give acces to project 2003 for
more than one user initially.

The SharePoint part is Windows SharePoint Services which is free, so if you
are putting that on the same server as Project Server 2003, there are no
extra costs involved with it.

Hi,

you can use Project Server 2003 with MSDE 2000, which is the cost free light
version of SQL Server 2000:

The limitation are, but are not limited to, that you cannot use Portfolio
Analyzer Views.

SharePoint comes free with Windows Server 2003, but is not a must to run
Project Server 2003, since it runs also under Windows 2000 Server.

John:

You can simply save the projects to a shared directory or a database to
which everyone has access. I wouldn't recommend getting involved with
Project Server for simple file sharing. Do this only if you want to use
Project Server for tracking.

Note, John, that the "it" in the above sentence is Project Server 2003. WSS
will only run on Windows 2003 Server.

I presume that Renke would *if running Project Server 2003 on Windows 2003
Server* also install WSS. The WSS default installation uses WMSDE which
Project Server can't use, but it too can also be setup to use MSDE 2000 if
that is what Project Server 2003 is using (or, naturally, to use SQL Server
2K).
