Installing Project Server 2007

M

Mr Curious

I will be presented with a fresh base environment (two systems - base OS
with WSS3.0 and a SQL Server) to install Project Server 2007 on this
morning (help!). I understand it's just a matter of popping the disk in
the drive and 'following the bouncing ball' - as far as the 'binary'
installation goes. I can then perform the remainder of the installation
and configuration from a client machine via a web interface.

Any good resources or pointers?

we're doing planning in terms of functional specs, fields, workflow,
processes, etc.. I am just referring to the actual install here..
Configuration around process is another discussion.

Thanks for the references!

From the Technet resource - as far as installing the binary goes up to
the point of where I can log in via a web interface from a client
machine to complete configuration

Do I need the URL / access account or other details to get through the
steps below?

I presume after this I can log in via the web to provision the PWA and
Project Server 2007 system.

Install the binary files.

Select Complete for the server installation type.

Run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard (where
do I find this?)

*

Create a new farm.
*

Create a new configuration database.

#

Configure the farm services:

Start the Project Application service.

Even planning the install is reasonable detailed. Have you considered the
following:-

Backup/Restore
Application Availability/Scalability
Performance, No & Types of users\usage patterns\volume of project\documents
User access locations (Intranet/Extranet/Internet/VPN)
Administrative delegation (CA, SSP, PWA etc)
Storage Design/Requirements
Client apps deployment
(this list goes on)

Thank you fro the very kind reference to our books on Project Server! Your
recommendation means a lot to us. :)

M

Mr Curious

yes, but not for this particular post... I'm only interested in getting
past the 'binary install' to the point where I can continue
configuration from a web interface.

M

Mr Curious

okay so I don't need anything special to get through the binary install
stage to the point where I can continue from a web interface? Just
select 'complete install'?

Do I need to do anything else at the server level such as configure
SharePoint services or can that all be performed from the web interface
as well?

These questions only go to show a significant lack of preparation on your
part. I suggest you read the guides available both on Technet or paperback.

This forum is not a substitue for those who are too lazy to read the
information already widely available in the public domain.

I would not like to think of this approach as 'lazy' - more a case of
being extremely time constrained and with only a limited window to have
access to the physical server. I am reading through the Technet
resources while I'm discussing this here. I understand the
configuration process once the server is running, it's getting through
the installation process I'm concerned with as I have not performed this
before now. I'm honestly trying to prepare and read as much as I can in
the time that I have. Unfortunately the Technet resource doesn't seem
to detail the below steps in great detail - unless it's not required.

The Technet resource "Project Server TechCentre"
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc197479.aspx describes the
following after installing Project Server.

Run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard:

Create a new farm
Create a new configuration database.

And subsequently

Configure the farm services
• Start the Project Application service

I presume Step 4 (Create Web applications) can all be performed from
remotely from a web interface without having to be on the server itself.

According to Microsoft's "Deployment for Office Project Server 2007"
document - Page 38 - I won't require access to the physical server past
the "Configure the Farm Services" point - following the "Run the
SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard" step which
seems straight forward.

The remainder of the installation can be completed using the "SharePoint
Central Administration Web site" which I am familiar with from there.

Hi,

The biggest complication we have had so far is Project Server 2007
communicating with the SQL server - something to do with a network
switch having problems. I'll post a resolution in a new thread to this
discussion group when I have it.

Cheers..
