Installing SP3 Office update from full file version but asked for.

Sean Mac

I am trying to install the SP3 Office update from the full file version but I
get a dialog box asking me to insert the Office setup CD which I do then I
get an error message saying that the file PROPLUS.MSI cannot be found on the
CD. I have checked the CD and my computer and cannot find this file anywhere.

My original installation of Office 2003 Pro Edition 2003 was clean and from
the installation CD (not over a network).

Please help.

I am having a similar problem with Office XP Professional. It could not
locate the file PRO.MSI on my cds during normal install and support site said
to use the full file because it would not ask for a cd, but it still does and
I cannot get past this step, plus it has hosed my excel because it keeps
asking for the install whenever I try to open an excel document! please help!

I apologize for the multiple replies, the server kept responding that my post
had failed and to try again later, well the server lied.

Hi Sean,

SP3 indicates that you are installing an update
for Office 2000 or Office XP(2002) rather than
Office 2003. (Office 2003 is only up to SP1).

If your Office 2003 edition did
not have all of the progrmas (such as FrontPage)
that were in the earlier editions then you probably
still have a 2000 or 2002 or XP/2002 product still
listed as installed in Windows Control Panel in
Add/Remove Programs.

Proplus.msi is from the Volume License only
MS Office XP Professional + Front Page edition.
Check in Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel
to see if the name listed there of the Office XP edition
that you have installed is the same as the Edition on
the Microsoft original CDs.

The source CD and the installed edition need to be a match.

If the name is not the same you'll likely need to either obtain
the matching CD from the PC supplier or company that supplied
MS Office, or backup your files, uninstall the current edition
then restart and install from the edition that you have.

Hi Kevin,

The MS Installer always expects to have access to the
original installation point/media when it detects that
something needs repairing/reinstalling as part of
the update process and in some degree to limitations
of some versions of the MS Installer. This is true
even when you then use the full file replacement versions
of the updates.

If its looking for the CD when starting the program then
the MS Installer (MSI) believes that there is something it
needs to fix or there may be products from more than one
Office series (97, 2000, XP/2002, 2003) in Add/Remove
Programs in the Windows control panel.

Bob...

I've been operating with Microsoft Office XP Pro with Frontpage and
tried to install Office 2003. Ran into the same problems as Sean.
Here's the question:
Does Office 2003 have Frontpage?
If it doesn't have Frontpage, I'll need to uninstall Office 2003 and
go back to XP because I need that Frontpage. Will I run into any
problems by simply clicking uninstall on Start/Control Panel/Add
Remove Programs/Office 2003?
Thanks
