Installing XP Pro from desktop to XP Home Edition on Laptop

S

Seeker

Hello,

I recently purchased a new Dell Inspirion 600 M laptop. I bought a Dell
Dimension 2400 desktop 2 ½ years ago. The laptop has XP Home edition while
the desktop has XP Pro with the latest updates including Svc. Pk. 2.

I’d like to install the XP Pro onto the laptop. A few of the methods I
thought might work, haven’t. Do I have to wipe XP Home clean from the laptop
and reconfigure it using the MS XP Pro CD(s) that came with my desktop? When
I try to install the MS Office suite to the laptop from a CD ROM I used to
copy Office to, I get this message: “The operating system is not configured…â€

I don’t want to do anything that will harm either machine. I’d also like to
get this taken care of as soon as is feasible. I’ve been told by Dell and
other reps that I can use the software (XP Pro) on at least 2 machines. In
this case one is my desktop and the other will be my laptop. Please advise.
And, Happy New Year!!!!!

Thanks,

Rick

OEM software cannot be installed or transferred to
a different computer. Whoever told you otherwise
is mistaken. You need to purchase "Retail Versions"
of Windows XP Professional and Microsoft Office
for installation on your laptop.
