Instant Search (WDS 3.0) issues/suggestions with Outlook 2007 b2tr

The most important feature of a search engine is to find what the user is
searching for. Instant Search (as well as Exchange’s Full Text Search and
Windows Explorer search with Indexing Service) doesn’t to this. It’s
definitely much faster, but won’t find everything you’re looking for.

1) If you search for a word or number that’s missing its first
letter/number, you won’t find any matches.
2) If you search for “Eagle Riverâ€, you will not find any occurrences of
“EagleRiverâ€.
3) When Instant Search is disabled (WDS un-installed), Advanced Find will
find “EagleRiver†when searching for “Riverâ€. When it is enabled, Advanced
Find will not find this occurrence.

Other suggestions:

1) If using the Instant Search on a folder that is not indexed, the old (and
slower) method should be used. This occurs when connecting to another
Exchange Mailbox, or searching a Public Folder not in your favorites (using
cached Exchange mode with Exchange 2000 – it appears to index only the
favorites tree).
2) Instant Search should have a “Select Folder(s)†option similar to
Advanced Find. ‘Current folder’ and “Search All Outlook Items†isn’t enough.
I don’t want to read matches from folders I know the email is not in.
3) Date criteria fields should also have a date picker (rather than having
to type “>=7/1/2006â€)
4) Criteria Fields selection and position should use something like the
Field Chooser. You should be able to drag and drop them to remove them from
the list.
5) When Instant Search is disabled (WDS un-installed), performing a search
of “from:john†will return messages where John is in the From, To, or CC
fields. More results return if the search criteria is just “johnâ€.
(Searching for “ohn†with Instant Search won’t return any John hits due to
the issue above)
6) Instant Search should only be an addition to the old method – not a
replacement. Example, the Index should be queried based on the search.
Then, any messages that were not matched should be searched the old method.
Maybe there should be a check box for “Perform Extensive Searchâ€, giving the
user the choice whether or not to rely solely on the index.
7) Instant Search should use the Full Text Index of Exchange, so we don’t
have >200 computers simultaneously building indexes, killing our Exchange
servers.

To share my experiences, my requirements for searching have required me to
disable Exchange Full Text Indexing, change the default Windows Explorer
search behavior (KB309173), and even having to use the “dir /s†and “find /iâ€
to find files. As it currently stands, I have to disable the Instant Search
to do my job.

Outlook 2007 b2tr (v12.0.4407.1004)
Desktop Search v3.0 (KB917013-XP-x86-enu)
Exchange 2000
