"insufficient Memory" Error in Word 2001

I am running Office 2001 on a Mac. I am having trouble trying to open
certain documents, it says "insufficient memory". There are no other
programs or windows open, and our memory is up to 300000 K. I don't
believe the documents are corrupt because they have opened before.
Sometimes they open, sometimes they don't you don't ever know when
they will work or not. Once I get the "insufficient memory" error
message, it won't open any files, so I have to restart the program. We
have re-installed Microsoft office and that doesn't help either. Any
suggestions, this problem is driving us crazy!

Have you tried getting rid of the file extension before
opening? I use a Mac and extensions can be problematic.
