insufficient memory or disk space error

Hello everyone, I have microsoft office xp on my laptop and up until about
yesterday my microsoft word had been working ok. Now everytime I try to open
an existing document or even try to type something on word it displays a
bunch of jibberish and shows an error that reads "insufficient memory or disk
space error". I checked my disk space and there is plenty of space left on
the hard drive. I have no viruses or spyware. When I copy the text that I
can make out and paste it in Notepad it works fine. What could be causing
the problem and how would I be able to fix it?
