Insufficient Memory

Tami

I am running Office 2001 on a Mac. I am having trouble trying to open
certain documents, it says "insufficient memory". There are no other
programs or windows open, and our memory is up to 300000 K. I don't
believe the documents are corrupt because they have opened before.
Sometimes they open, sometimes they don't you don't ever know when
they will work or not. Once I get the "insufficient memory" error
message, it won't open any files, so I have to restart the program. We
have re-installed Microsoft office and that doesn't help either. Any
suggestions, this problem is driving us crazy!

Thanks

Tami

When you say your "memory is up to" 300MB, are you talking about memory
allocated to Word, or available system memory?

If the latter, select Word in the Finder and choose File/Get
Info/Memory. Set the "preferred" memory allocation to 48,000 KB or more.
Leave the "minimum" memory allocation alone (probably about 7,000 KB).

The memory allocated to Word was 300,000 K. I put it as you suggested
and it still gives me the error. Any other suggestions?

Hi Tami:

I suspect the document contains too many edits.

If you can get the document open at all:

1) Create a new blank document

2) Copy all EXCEPT the last paragraph mark to the new document

3) Save under a new file name.

"Insufficient memory" is actually a generic error message that means "I was
unable to complete loading this file into memory."

There are lots of causes of that. Another cause can be that your system's
Temporary memory space on disk is full: try rebooting the computer. That
will clear it.

Another problem can be caused by too many abandoned temporary files: clean
out all "work" files from your hard disk (i.e. Files with the words "Word
Work File" in their names).

But my bet is that it's a simple corrupt document and the method I
recommended first will fix it.

Hope this helps
