Integration estimation and project plan process

V

Vivek S

Greetings !

We have excel templates to do Work Breakdown Structure estimates. The
estimates are provided in man hours
It is fairly detailed and to certain extent also represent the execution
steps of the project. As of now we have the project managers estimate using
excel sheet and then create the project plan in Ms-Project. 60% of the tasks
that are created in MS Project were already available in excel.
Just wondering if something similar to following is possible :
a) Either import excel into the project so that the estimates from excel
becomes the WORK column of Project
b) Have a template in which users can do the estimation in project file
itself (not sure whether it is possible at all)...

Any help is appreciated

hi Vivek,

You can import information into Microsoft Project 2003 into any entered
field from MS Excel. Pre-defined maps are available and you can define your
own custom field mapping as well. The Export Wizard and the Import Wizard are
helpful tools for transferring project data between Microsoft Project 2003
and other programs. Using predefined or custom export/import maps, these
wizards provide you with easy-to-follow instructions for placing exported or
imported data in the appropriate destination fields.

To use the Import Wizard, on the File menu, click Open. The Import Wizard
will appear automatically when you select a file to open that has a file
format of Microsoft Excel Workbook.

Here are the step by step instructions:
Click Open . In the Files of type box, click the Ms Excel Workbook (xls) you
want to import data from.

In the Look in box, locate the folder that contains the file you want to
import, and then select the file in the file list.

Click Open. Follow the instructions in the Import Wizard to import the data
you want into the proper Microsoft Project fields.

Depending upon the data you can also use copy paste commands. You can insert
data from Excel into Microsoft Office Project 2003 as a linked object for
dynamic updates from the source file. You can also embed it independent of
its original file.

In Excel, select the data you want to link or embed, and then click Copy .
In Project, on the View menu, click the view you want.
To use a view that is not on the View menu, click More Views, click the view
you want to use in the Views list, and then click Apply.

Select the location where you want to insert the data.
On the Edit menu, click Paste Special.
To link the data to the source document, select Paste Link.
To embed the data independent of the source document, select Paste. Under
As, click Text Data.

Kind regards,
