Interactive Buttons not available for Shared borders - FP 2003

Phillip Vong

I'm running Frontpage 2003

I created a Left shared border and I want to put in a coupld of Interactive
Buttons, but that option is greyed out. I can insert Interactive buttons
everywhere but inside the shared borders. I'm sure the answer is simple,
but I can not figure it out. Please help. When you post an answer to this
board, can you also send a copy of the answer to phillip_vong*at*yahoo.com.
Thanks for your help.

They are not supported in Shared Borders, use a DWT instead which is a replacement for Shared
Borders.

Thanks for writing back, but I don't think you're right about this. I'm
asking this because I've used Interactive Buttons in shared borders before.
If you look at www.croftleo.com, the Nav buttons are in a shared border and
they have interactive buttons. I just doubled checked it and I'm right. I
opened the htm files and I see the shared borders and I see the interactive
buttons that I can modify the buttons. I did this a while back so I
couldn't remember how I did it.

Thomas, what is DWT? Sorry, I'm sort of new to this Front Page stuff.

Can someone tell me how come I can have interactive buttons in the last site
I built, but not any of the new ones?

Thanks!

If you want to use IBs in shared borders, you will have to manually copy the JavaScript code from
the head section of the shared border page and paste into the head section of each that is using the
specific shared border. However each time you modify or add IBs, you will have to repeat this
process.

This is not the same as applying a theme with Active Graphics (image swaps)

DWT = Dynamic Web Template.

See www.rxs-enterprises.com/fp/b/buttons/

You can insert IBs directly in the shared border files top.htm, left.htm
etc. in the _borders folder, but they will not work in all pages - in
particular they will not work in your Home page or pages in the root
folder.[1]
As Thomas said, DWT (Dynamic Web Template) is a much better choice than
Shared Borders.

[1] In www.croftleo.com, I would like to know how you managed to get FP to
change
onmouseup="FP_swapImg(0,0,/*id*/'img26',/*url*/'../buttons/button11.gif')
in the _borders/left.htm
to
onmouseup="FP_swapImg(0,0,/*id*/'img26',/*url*/'buttons/button11.gif')
in the home page. This is something that I have never seen happen before
when using IBs and shared borders/include pages, and up until now, I would
say could not be done without manual editing.

Thanks for the update. I guess I better do a quick Tutorial on DWT. Know
where I can get a quick tutorial on this from a website?

Ronx, I have no idea how that happend. I'm not a programmer and I don't
remember moving any of the codes. I have no idea how I got the IBs to work
in the shared borders, but it just worked. I don't even know what
(onmouseup="FP_swapImg(0,0,/*id*/'img26',/*url*/'../buttons/button11.gif')
in the _borders/left.htm) means. I hope DWT is something easy.

Thanks guys.

I just spent a little time learning about DWT, wow!!! I wished I did this
from the beginning. I'm using this from now on instead of the shared
borders.

Thanks!
