Interbook Cross References--Quadralay WebWorks

Hello. Does anyone know whether Word can set "interbook" cross references
(i.e., refer to a heading/section in a DIFFERENT file)? Word can set cross
references within a file, but I'm not sure if Word can set references to a
different file.

There is something of a workaround--you can insert sections from different
file as a link (if you've bookmarked them), but then those inserts do not
convert to HTML links when the file is converted to HTML by Quadralay
WebWorks Publisher. If we could find a way to either: 1. Get Word to be able
to set a cross reference to a section in a different document OR 2. Get
Quadralay to convert an insertion from a different file as an HTML link, then
Word would trump FrameMaker in every single respect. (FrameMaker's only
advantage at this stage is being able to set cross references to different
files).

Any advice? Please advise and thanx!

Yes, we know :) No, it can't :)

Word can set hyperlinks to external documents without a problem, and Word
can convert such a document to XHTML.

I have done a lot of publishing to the web simply using Save As Web Page out
of Word. It works, and your hyperlinks will survive.

However, if you introduce Quadralay into the process, you need to consult
their literature on how to make that program pass Word's hyperlinks. If
Quadralay is reading Word's native .doc format, the hyperlinks are in there.
If it is first converting to RTF, that will be your problem.

You may wish to try a copy of the newest version, Word 2007. Its native
format is XML, which might suit your purposes better: it gives you the
ability to attach an external style sheet, which I suspect is why you are
using Quadralay in the first place.

If you don't want to go with Word 2007, get back to me and I can give you a
complicated work-around for using CSS with Word 2000 or Word 2003.

Cheers
