intergrating other,3rd party programs with Word 2000

Is there anyway to create a shortcut to another program,
place that shortcut as a button on Word's toolbar so that
I can open that program from Word. I am a writer and I am
trying to intergrate my NovelPro2 software which shows my
Characters, Scenes, Outlines, etc...into Word so that I
can open it when needed for referrence from Word...rather
than having to go back & forth from both programs.
