Intermittent failure during send from Word or Publisher

I seem to be having intermittent problems when sending email from within Word
and Publisher. Both have indicated at times that there was some type of
failure as it interfaced with my email system. My recent experience with
attempts from within Publiisher usually start out with a fatal error with
Contact Manager (send feedback request). I try again and things seem to go
smootly through the address forms, but when I issue the email SEND I get a
string of failures ending up with a message that Publisher's link to email
failed.

If I restart both apps (Outlook and Publisher) the next attempt appears to
go fine. However, if I boot, I'll get the problem again.

Before I figure out how to uninstall and reinstall without data loss, are
there other things I should try?
