Intermittent issues where Word 2002 users cannot open Word 2003 fi

Issue. Files created in Word 2003. Sometimes use templates, sometimes dont.
Files sent via Outlook 2003 to 2002 users. Some 2002 users can open and work
in the files without issues. Others have WORD CRASH when trying to open the
documents. Cannot isolate issue. Home grown templates used, but cannot be
identified as the issue. No macro viruses found.

When using templates we create styles. As users edit files (copy/paste data
from other sources) styles not original to the template embed in the
document. There is some correlation to styles corrupting the files, but
cannot be confirmed, as they WORK from some documents and not others.
Unfortunately, the issue also occurs when templates are NOT used. You can
manually delete the styles from the document or copy the data into a new file
as unformatted text to "get them to open in the lower versions of word" but
it does NOT fix the issue with all docs.

Security settings for all users regardless of 2002/2003 versions set to HIGH.

We had thought possibly spoofing/infection by a user who worked via wireless
at Starbucks. But no viruses found on that persons machine. Yet there is
correlation between files having issues and that user.

ANY ideas anyone may have about this please feel free to email me.

Is this internal email or external email (or both)?

Email traffic in our firm flows both internally and externally. I didn't
believe the delivery method was the issue, just specifying that we transmit
the files this way. Our server is not accessible by everyone in the
organization.

When you identify a document that has been sent to and crashes on a WD2002
PC, back on the source machine, open the original document using the Open
and Repair option to see if WD2003 finds an error or corruption in the
document.

I presume that the WD2003 installation have the Compatibility Save options
set to ignore features introduced since... ?
