Intern forgot to save again, hour and half lost

A new intern was working on an excel file for hour and half. I went to close it, save it first, and a large dialogue box came up. It would not let me save the file. I couldn't understand a word of the box, so I just clicked don't save. I could not figure out what to do, how to get out.

Sure enough all work was lost.

It was not like last month where I clicked on the open file name, this was something new. Anyone have an idea?

Intern said the box said something about not being able to access the file.

I don't get it. The file is open, we are trying to save the file but we can't save the file. So we close the file and lose all work.

Last month, acutally we lost 2 hours of work, but that was in Word, something about wanting to retrive the file.
