Internal number references

How do I create a reference to a paragraph number that is
actively updated as this number changes? I.e. "See
paragraph 29." Paragraph 29 changes as I add and delete
paragraphs.

I tried "cross reference", "bookmark", but they do not
seem to do the trick.

Hi Jon,

Cross-reference should do it, if this is automatic paragraph
numbering? Which version of Word? You do need to actively
force field updates to display changed cross-reference
content (Ctrl+A, F9)

And you don't need to add a bookmark, since autonumbered paragraphs can be
cross-referenced as "numbered item" (or "heading" if they're autonumbered
paragraphs using any of Word's built-in heading styles).

Even LISTNUM fields can be cross-referenced from
the "Numbered item" category.
