Internal Office Email - Small Office

Is there a way to send internal email or internal instant messages that do not go out over the Internet without purchasing an expensive server? We have four computers on a wireless network running windows xp pro, Outlook, Outlook Express, and using a Linksys wireless router and WEP security (I Know -- WEP is sad, but we had enough trouble just setting that up). I would like to be able to send an email to my boss two doors down the hall, perhaps attaching an extremely sensitive client attachment, without it going over the internet. I know we could address this using an email certificate and doing encryption, but it seems there should be a way to keep office email in the office without spending a lot of money.

Thanks, but replacing our operating system and installing new software and retraining our staff accordingly for all the things we do just isn't practical. Especially since we need to be compatible with software products used by our customers. I have used and developed sofware on Unix extensively, and I agree it is great operating system -- but not very user friendly for non-techy types
