International character toolbar stopped working then disappeared

I installed the international character toolbar about 6 months ago and have
found it a very useful little add-on.

Today I was trying to edit a document in Word 2003 in German. The
international character toolbar was visible but had stopped working - nothing
happened when I clicked to insert any characters.

I downloaded the add-on again and ran the repair feature (an option when you
launch the downloaded software) but this did not fix the problem. I then
tried uninstalling and reinstalling it. I get a message telling me that the
installation has been successful but when I open Word, there is no sign of
the toolbar. It is not visible in the toolbar area, and it is not available
as an option to select from the list of toolbars. I read an answer in one of
these discussion groups to a similar problem, which suggested that the
toolbar would not work if the Macro security settings in Word were set too
high, but even when I tried setting them down to 'low', I still can't find
the international character toolbar.

I have also tried doing a system restore back to a point when I know the
toolbar was working a few days ago, but that didn't help either, no sign of
the toolbar anywhere.

What else can I try? I am really irritated to be without this feature as I
need to work on documents in German and French fairly often and I have found
this by far the most convenient way to enter accented characters.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Nicky,

In Word 2003 check first in

Help=>About=>[Disabled items]
to see if the toolbar is listed there.

From Tools=>Customize=>Commands
in the 'Tools' category, drag the COM Add-Ins item to the Tools menu, close the dialog and then use Tools=>COM Add-Ins, to see if
the
International Character Toolbar is checkmarked.

Bob - thank you so much!

The toolbar was listed in the Disabled items and I have now re-enabled it
and it is back! Now I can get on with my German editing.

Hi there,

actually I have a very similar problem. I'm using Word2003 with XP SP2,
German versions.

The toolbar still appears /half/ (I want to use the languages Croatian,
French, Polish and Swedish, but only Croatian and French appear), and if I
click on the characters, they are not typed...
Help=>About=>[Disabled items]
ICT is not listed.
From Tools=>Customize=>Commands
in the 'Tools' category, drag the COM Add-Ins item to the Tools menu, close
the dialog and then use Tools=>COM Add-Ins
ICT is listed and checkmarked.

Has anybody more suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Hi Patkul,

Are all of those languages enabled in Windows Control Panel,
Regional and Language Settings=>Languages=>Details

Hi Bob,

thanks for your reply.

No, the languages weren't enabled, but doing so changed nothing.

The phenomenom is strange:

I install ICT. I start Word, and ICT works fine.

I quit Word, restart it. ICT still works fine.

I reboot my computer, start Word - and well, I can still see the ICT-toolbar
(or at least a part of it), but when I click on the characters, nothing
happens. The toolbar is "dead".

Repair function of the ICT-installer does not work. I've to remove and
re-install it. Then it works again. For this session...

P.S.:

Now the ICT disappeared without reboot. I just closed the document and
reopened it. All toolbar-fields were there, but "empty" (without any
characters). So, it was even worse than before, when I could at least the the
(functionless) characters.

Again, repair function did not work, but remove and re-install again
functioned. Well, I had to remove all those empty toolbar-fields (which was
quite annoying because I had to guess which "French-field" in the list is the
new (working) and which is the old (empty)).

I assume that it has something to do with saving or not saving the document:

The toolbar disappears (or looses its functionality) when I do NOT save a
document and quit Windows. At least I think so.

Could there be something wrong with my normal.dot-file???

Thanks for any suggestions
