International Date Format

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Problem:
Using System Settings>International>Formats>Region: GREECE (GREEK)
Excel 2008 does not switch to DD/MM/YY format as it should but remains locked to the US standard of MM/DD/YY (although months appear in Greek).

I am using Region: United Kingdom to temporarily solve the problem.
Is there a real solution?
