internet explorer encountered a problem

I have tried to download updates for Micosoft office 2000 professional, when
it checks for updates and gets to about 98% I then get the error "Internet
explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" I have gone through
all the suggestions on the troubleshooting page and still no luck. Could this
be happening because the program is not certified for winXP? please give any
advice in simple terms as I am a novice when it comes to this stuff.
Thanks to all who reply, R.T.B.

Office 2000 works fine on Windows XP. Remember, Office 2000 came out long
before Windows XP which is probably why it says what it does on the disc.

Thanks Milly, so now I know that the problem is not to do with the version of
office that I have, that leaves me with the original question, why does
Internet explorer encounter a problem when trying to download updates,( is
downloading the updates worth doing after all this?) I'm sorry for going on
about this but i'm still no further forward.
Ray.
