Internet Format mysteriously changed to Send Using Outlook Rich Te

I have read several posts stating that importing contacts can change the
Internet Format from the default of Let Outlook decide the best sending
format but this contact was not recently imported. The user would not have
the knowledge to manually change the format from the Properties of the email
address within Contacts. Is there any other explanation that would cause the
format to change on its own? Something in the process of delivery...?
Thanks in advance!

Version of Outlook? its actually set on the contact to use RTF? I've seen it
happen in older versions where the autoresolve cache stored the RTF flag and
didn't pick up changes to the contact. I also know contacts synced with
sharepoint are always RTF.
