Internet Server Error; Error on Page

S

Steve Fischer

We recently implemented the server by following the step-
by-step implementation plan as specified by a MS Partner.
However, when we try to login via either the web client or
the MSP Professional, we get a series of three main errors:

1) After a few minutes of use, we encounter a db error and
the page asks us to logon again (despite out NT logon id
being recognized previously): Microsoft Project was unable
to log you on at this time because the Microsoft Project
Server database cannot be accessed. Please try again later
or check with your Microsoft Project Server administrator.
(5001)

Resolution: Logon to the box hosting the MS Project 2002
Server, and either reset IIS on the server, -OR- simply
goto the /projectserver web client from that very box (not
a client workstation) and IT COMES BACK TO LIFE?!?

2) Page Failures all over the place. Seems like every page
on the web client fails in some way, and the pages are not
being populated with anything. Currently, the database is
empty; do we need data in there to manipulate before the
pages come up? A typical Error on Page is as follows:
Line: 1364
Char: 3
Error: Internet Server Error
Code:0
URL: http://localhost/projectserver/Admin/Sec_Users.asp?
_oid=1

Resolution: None

3) Resource Center: An error occurred while trying to
access the resources stored on the database. Either there
are too many resources, or the Microsoft Project Server
may not have the correct DSN configuration. Contact the
server administrator.

Resolution: None

Is there anyone out there who has experienced these kinds
of bugs before? We are trying to get the server off the
ground. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks.

I am also experiencing errors of the type described in 2 above.

For example on the Admin -> Manage users and groups page the select
box with existing users is missing. The following error is reported
by IE6:

Error: Method cannot be invoked on business object.
Code:0
URL: http://server/projectserver/Admin/Sec_Users.asp

Forgive me if I am relieved that someone else is
experiencing these issues! Have you been able to figure
out a cause to the page errors? I don't think it's a data
issue...I've narrowed it down to either a DB connectivity/
permmsions issue, or a server issue (like security).

What do you think?

Thanks,

Steve

Steve:

What other applications are you running on the server? Do you have virus
scanning implemented on the server? Do all the features of PWA work when
you're working on the server itself? What was different about the
installation instructions you received from the partner than what is
recommended in the installation guide?

Yahoo! If anyone can answer my questions, Gary Chefetz
can!

The server was just born. It's a Dell PowerEdge
6300/400Mhx; 2GB Physical RAM. We're the only game in town-
-there are no other apps on the box. (It's strictly a
development box.) There is a proprietary security app
running on the box from Symantec, and Norton AV is
installed.

I receive the exact same page failures while logged on
from both the server and any workstation. All workstations
are running IE 5.5.4807 SP2.

The database is on a separate Win2k/SQL server 2k box
dedicated to development DB's--but there exist a couple of
DB's on it besides MS Project Server 2002. We set up two
service accounts on the SQL server, as specified in a user
guide provided by a MS Project Partner, to access the DB.
Both accounts work when logging in to the DB manually.

Where do you suggest I look to find a direct cause to the
issue? We followed the instructions exactly--they did not
significantly deviate from the MS guide.

Thanks. Please let me know what more info you need to help
me deduce this problem.

I agree that it seems to be a permissions issue between the server
running IIS and the one with SQL Server. I am currently at a loss on
how to narrow it down.

I also get an error message when trying to connect to PS from within
Project 2002 Pro. Tools -> Enterprise Options -> Microsoft Project
Server Accounts -> Add...

I find that after I type the URL and try "Test Connection" I get a
failure message.

Note: I have another installation of Project Server with SQL Server on
the same machine (i.e. I have a properly working trial install on
Machine A where PS and SQL are installed. I am experiencing the
problems above where PS is installed on Machine B and its SQL server
is installed on Machine C).

Steve: Please read through the individual responses below:

OK--Here's how I get around that one! Sign into the
Project server as the Administrator **from the box on
which the server resides**. In other words, if Machine A
is a PC with MSP Professional, and Machine B is a server
with PS installed, and Machine C is the SQL Server, then
open up a web browser in Machine B (the server) and see if
you can get in. Then try the "Test Connection".

Note: I have another installation of Project Server with SQL Server on

.

So, you are convinced that it could be a permissions
issue? Or perhaps the DSN betw. the PS and the SQL Server
is the culprit? What is your next move on this? I wish
there were a system log for Project Server we could look
at...do you know of one?

Thanks,

Steve

Steve:

Assuming that you're running under a domain, and that you used domain
accounts for Com+ identities, then I'd kill NAV and see if that helps.

Steve Zielinski:

How are your issues progressing?
I tried zapping NAV (disabling the service), but it had no
effect.

Any more ideas, Gary?

Steve:

What version of IE is installed on the server?
Did you set IP restrictions on the msadcs.dll to granted?
