invalid character in email address

I have been trying to send out an email to someone with the following address
format:

fname.lname(w/ character " ö " somewhere in the name)@zhk.ch
eg: mel.caö@zhk.ch

I'm getting an error saying "The operation failed," and the messege isnt
sent out.
What's causing the problem and how can I get a work around if possible?
