!Invalid character setting

I'm using Mac OS 8.6 and Office 98 for Mac.
Recently, every time I try to use the "formula" menu to
calculate the total amount of a column, I get the
message "!Invalid character setting". I've looked up for
an answer in the microsoft support center, but their
support is only for Windows based computers.

Any ideas?
