Invalid data1.msi file

I have unsuccessfully tried to install MS Office 2000 SP3 from the Office
Update site and from the SR-3 CD I received from Microsoft with the same
result: The installation program cannot find the Office SR-1 data1.msi file.
When I attempt to use the data1.msi from my original Office 2000 Upgrade
CD--Purchased direct from Microsoft--I receive an error message that says it
is not a valid msi file. When I attempt to use the data1.msi unbundled from
the SR-3 CD I receive the same error message. I migrated to Office 2000 from
Office 97 Professional (I still have the original CD).

So How do I get the setup program to recognize the data1.msi file as valid?

Hi, JimB. If you separately installed Front Page, Publisher, Visio, Access,
or another "2000" series Microsoft product after you installed Office 2000,
then try inserting the CD for that separate product when prompted for the
data1.msi file.

The only individual Office product I installed after Office 2000 was Visio
2002 Professional. I need THAT CD for an Office 2000 update?

Doesn't make sense.

hi Jim,

When you're prompted for the Data1.msi file on CD the
dialog should have a box labeled 'use feature from'
that names the product the installer wants.

Chekc in Add/Remove programs in the Windows control
panel to see if you have any 2000 series Microsoft
products listed other than MS Office 2000.

1. When I attempt the upgrade, the pull-down for "Use feature from" asks for
the Microsoft Office 2000 Standard CD, which I have (upgrade version used for
original install). When I insert it, a dialog box appears saying it couldn't
find the feature, and asks for a path to a valid data1.msi file.

2. I checked the entries in the Add/Remove Programs window, the system has
the following entries for Office 2000:
Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Standard
Microsoft Office 2000 Webarchive
Add-On
Microsoft Office Converter Pack

I've already attempted to load SR-3 from the CD I received from Microsoft,
the installation program rejected the data1.msi file provided with the
service pack.

What next?
