Invalid file format

Excel files that have been opened in Word, and then saved
(and the warning about it being saved in Word format
ignored), will no longer open in Excel, understandably.
Does anyone know if the file can be resurrected as a
vaild excel file?
How some users in my office manage to do this is beyond
me - I think strangling them may be the only solution!
TIA

Have you tried saving as HTML (Office 2000 up)?

This may be successful. If not, you are stuck with copying and pasting the
values
