When I try to import contacts from and Excel file (xls), I get an error
message that says I have an Invalid SAM ID. Any clues?

Version of Outlook? Version of Excel? How are you attempting the import?

Invalid SAM ID indicates a connection failure with your servers - SAM =
Security Access Manager and is not an Outlook related issue (just that
problem shows itself within Outlook which is completely different than being
an Outlook specific issue). In general, something has changed in your
environment which has made the SAM ID for the machine you are using invalid
between server/workstation.

Beyond that - to narrow this down a tad more:

#1 - Is this Outlook '2007 or Outlook '2007 with BCM? If with BCM, the
question should be posted in the applicable newsgroup for BCM which uses a
different import/export engine then the one used in Outlook without BCM and
stores it's data in an SQL database. All kinds of different factors at play
between the two. (If you post this to the BCM newsgroup - suggest you
include some of these answers with the question)
#2 - Does this happen on just one machine or every machine? If every
machine - what fields are mapped? (If this involves a BCM related issue and
the error is coming from the SQL side of things - this issue will likely
occur on every machine)
#3 - What is the <exact> message - <in its entirety complete with any error
number> - that you are getting?
#4 - Are you importing to a BCM folder? If not a BCM folder - then is the
target folder PST based or Exch based? If Exch, do you get the same error
when importing to a PST based folder? If Exch, if you create another contact
folder in the same Mailbox and import to that - does the same issue exist?
#5 - At what point exactly does this error occur - immediately when
importing starts or during the import process (ergo - have some contacts
been imported prior to getting the message)?
