Invalid use of null sender

I apologize if this is a repeat posting - not sure if the first one took
I am using Outlook 2003 version 11.5608.5606.
My email is setup as a POP3 in and SMTP out
My Outbox is empty
If I click the "Send/Receive" button, the task bar shows that it is sending 1 of (but remember that there is nothing in the OUtbox) and then I get the following error message

Task 'Mail - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC6E) : ' The server responded: 553 5.3.0 Invalid use of null sender

Has anyone seen this before? If so, how did you correct this? Any help would be appreciated
