I recently received very annoying user interface error from an incorrectly
processed s/mime message.
The message's headers expressed that it was digitally signed.
"Content-Type: multipart/signed;
protocol="application/x-pkcs7-signature";
micalg=SHA1;
boundary="----=_NextPart_000_026C_01C919AC.9CB0C6B0"
But the actual message part with the signature was striped out by a
processing server somewhere in the SMTP chain.
The result is than in both, outlook 2003 and 2007, when you try to open the
message you get a message box with the "The item cannot be open. Your digital
ID cannot be found by the underlying security system. ", which is clearly
misleading.
The message itself cannot be opened, only forwarded by drag-drop.
A correct way to address this issue is to simply show the message with a
broken signature icon.
Both outlook clients work in native exchange mode, but working against two
fully independent exchange 2003 servers. All of them are fully patched.
FYI, I could retrieve the message to analyze it by using a Thunderbird
client against Exchange's POP3 service.
