A little more detail is required. For instance, how is your data set up?
Is the main category in a separate cell:

A B
1 Socks Athletic
2 Socks Fuzzy
3 Socks Dress

(in which case a Pivot Table would be ideal: see

http://peltiertech.com/Excel/Pivots/pivotstart.htm

for an introduction).

Or is the item description all in one cell (and if so, is there a
pattern?):

A
1 Fuzzy warm socks
2 Dress socks, blue
3 Socks, athletic, white
