INVISIBLE SPREADSHEET with Excel 2007

E

Ed Smega

I have been linking to a spreadsheet to monitor grades posted by my
instructor. I have been accessing it for several months with no problem
until last week. Excel 2007 is opening the spreadsheet because as I press
the arrow keys, I can see the cell address change in the NAME BOX and see
the formulas in the FORMULA BOX, but the whole spreadsheet area is blank.
How can the file be open but the sheet not be visible?

By jumping through a lot of hoops, I can open the spreadsheet with my old
version of Excel and it displays fine, so I don't think the problem is with
the file, additionally none of the other students have complained.

IT WORKED !!
Now that leads to 2 questions: What happened that makes this necessary?
What can I do so I don't have to keep doing this "arrange all" every time I
open this spreadsheet, bearing in mind that it is a read only document.

Hi Ed,

The cause was that the worksheet had been moved beyond your current screen's display area - perhaps it was saved by someone using a
dual monitor setup, with the worksheet on the secondary monitor.

I appreciate your thoughtful responses, perhaps you could help me understand
this. I notice that when the sheet opens, the NAME BOX has address V5.
There is data in this cell, so I don't understand how the sheet could be
moved beyond the display area. If the current cell is V5, why isn't the V5
area of the sheet displayed? I can use the arrow keys to get the box to
show A1 - why wouldn't that position the A1 cell on my screen?

Hi Ed,

If the sheet isn't maximised, you can drag it around the Excel workspace by left-clicking on sheet window margin, holding down the
left button and dragging it to wherever you want. By having the cursor over a corner of the worksheet window when you do this, you
can almost drag the entire sheet off the visible workspace - especially if the worksheet is minimised. The current scroll setting
for the worksheet has no effect on this - the visible scroll area within the worksheet window is independent of the window's
location in relation to the Excel workspace.

OK, sounds logical. One last question - why don't I see this phenomenon
when I open the spreadsheet with Excel 97, I only see this with Excel 2007.
