"invisible" standard and formatting toolbars

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

I am unable to see the icons of the formatting and standard toolbars, even if they are ticked in the view/toolbars menu

any ideas?

Try clicking on the small pill-shaped button in the upper right corner of
the document window. That button hides the regular toolbars, so you must
have clicked it by accident. Clicking it a second time will bring them back.
