invisible text except on "Quick Look"

When I try to open a file, I see only a cover page and no text following it, but when I choose "Quick Look" from the file menu when the file is highlighted but before I've opened it, the text comes up, albeit in a weirdly formatted way, but it's there. Does anyone know what I can do to access this text and make it visible and editable within the normal document again?
