IP Addressing with Small Business Server

I'm trying to set up SBS with a SOHO account, static IP Address, using a
router for DHCP, and I'm having problems understanding why I can't configure
my client/server network using the static IP address scheme. My server
machine has only one NIC, and I don't want the server to be a DHCP server. I
want the router to do that. How do I configure the router and my server to
make this happen with static IP addressing? I understand that the static IP
address is for external internet connection and that dynamic IP addressing is
for my LAN, but I'm not clear on how to configure the server & the router to
achieve this LAN system to work properly. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

What brand and model router do you have? The router configuration options
will dictate your setup because the IP configuration options may be limited.
