My "guess" would be as follows - That is a standard for graphic image file
formats & used by graphics programs - one of which Word is *not* - which
treat the image as an image file. Once the image is inserted into a Word
document the embedded copy isn't an 'image' file any longer - IOW what you
see in the doc isn't a jpg or tiff or whatever. It's an emf [in PC Word],
which doesn't adhere to the IPTC standard.

Hi Charlie,

I'm not clear on what you mean by 'supported'. Word doesn't strip any content out of graphics that are inserted into Word.

Support for XMP (a standard that is to some degree superceding IPTC) EXIF and IPTC in graphics was one of the planned features of MS
Windows Vista. I haven't been tracking to see if it made 'the cut' of features working properly to be in this version of Windows,
but the graphics extensibility to allow 3rd parties to tie in to add that ability should survive. For Office 2003 the EXIF data is
'viewable' but not editable in MS Office Picture Manager and as Taz pointed out, it's something that a graphics program would be
more likely to offer as an editable feature.
