IRM - making a document expire in older v's of office?

I was wondering if anyone knows if setting up an expiry for a document
in Word 2003, using MS IRM would work with an end user who uses an
older Office version? I know from the Office help site they could get
full functionality by downloading a browser plug-in, but what I'm
interested in doing is sending someone a word file while being
confident it could not be viewed after a certain date, regardless of
the recipient's Office version / plug-in status, yet be sure
they'll be able to correctly view the file.
Thanks for any help, Val.

Hi V.,

Trying to control or 'backfill' features into an older version of Word or a viewer app that was created prior to the creation of the
feature isn't likely to happen to the point that you can 'guarantee' how it will work in any app that can work with Word files.

You may want to use the link below to check with the folks in the Information Rights Mgmt Svcs area for suggestions if you plan on
going that route. Any solution in Word that relies on a macro being run, for example wouldn't be reliable.
