irregular keyboard function

I am using Office XP Professional on a Dell Inspiron 8100
portable. The operating system is XP professional.
Several days ago my keyboard began to function sluggishly
in the Office applications, especially Word and Outlook.
Pressing keys will not always result in the appearance of
the character, space, etc. I found that switching the
keyboard layout from US English to Spanish or Italian
improves the performance but the problem still persists.
Dell sent me a new keyboard, which I successfully
installed, but the problem continues. This problem does
not occur when using MS programs such as Notepad or
Explorer. It seems it is restricted to Word and Outlook.
I would be grateful for any suggestions. Thank you.

Hi Joe,

If Speech Recognition is enabled Office apps may appear sluggish.
Check under the Tools menu and see if Speech is enabled.
