Is anyone considering Visual Web Developer?

B

Birk Binnard

MS has announced that FrontPage will be discontinued by the end of this
year and is suggesting people migrate to Visual Web Developer (VWD).

VWD is free (at least the "Express version is free) and it has some
interesting features, but it doesn't seem to be able to deal with a
FrontPage web much at all. Has anyone tried to use VWD to
import/convert a FrontPage web?

I downloaded VWD a few days ago and am unimpressed with it's abilities
to handle anything other than straight HTML. It seems as though someone
at MS was asleep at the switch when it came to providing a migration
path from FrontPage to VWD. VWD chokes on anything associated with
FrontPage styles, webbots such as hit counters, and links created from
Navigation View.

Why not just stick with FP 2003? It will be supported for quite some time.

In my opinion, "Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition"
is an introduction to Visual Studio 2005. The successor to FrontPage
(for most webmasters) will be Expressions Web Designer.

Currently, mainstream support will not be retired until 1-13-2009.
Extended
support will not be retired until 1-14-2014.

1. Support for FrontPage will be around for awhile.
2. For people familiar with FrontPage, the migration path will be either to
Expression Web Designer or SharePoint Designer.

If you don't use WSS or any SharePoint features, then the path would be
Expression.

Thanks, Ron. I think this whole change is confusing to people, at best.

At this point, we are unable to provide you with any specific information
about EWD, and are not allowed to do so.

That sounds like a short-sighted hosting company. How can they even
consider doing that given the replacement (if in fact it is a
replacement, backward compatible etc) isnt even out!

expressions import the webs created by FP2002?

Obviously we will have to fire them (BostonDataCenter) but that doesn't
really help my problem much....

Any HTML Editor can open any page/site created in FP.
