Is it a good idea to use Java?

I have used some Java applets on my site, but am concerned that Microsoft has
dropped distribution of Java with Internet Explorer 6 onwards.

I don't want a significant proportion of visitors to my site (under
construction) seeing placeholders instead of impressive effects. On the other
hand I don't want to lose some neat stuff if it is considered that most
people will have Java in place.

It's no use just putting a message pointing the user to download Java, I'm
not convinced that most members of the general community would do this.

Does the development community feel that it's best not to use Java now and
what is rough proportion of Java enabled users at a guess?

It never has been a good idea, Chris. Java applets are chunky, execute
unpredictably cross browser, and unless you REALLY need their function, are
(in my opinion) a totally unnecessary cosmetic frill.

I'd avoid them (and I have) diligently!
