Is it possible to create your own symbols in Word?

I would like to be able to create a symbol that places carats (^) directly
above an ordinal number, something like ^1, except that the carat would be
directly above the number. This is a symbol frequently used in music theory,
denoting scale degree.

Howdy,

I suspect that there are fonts out there that would have
what you want, but another approach would be to "roll your
own."

Here is a free tool that would allow you to do that:

All the best,

There is a utility that comes with WinXP and beyond that will allow creation
of characters to add to a font set:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\eudcedit.exe
It's easy enough to use. The results are fine for output to a printed page
but when you share a Word document file with someone who doesn't share your
modified font on their PC, the results are far less spectacular.
