Is it possible to use entourage 2004 and 2008 side by side?

My wife wants to keep entourage 2004 I'd like to switch to 2008. Using
different user accounts on the mac is not an option for me for several
reasons. As far as I understand, (one reason) it's not possible
because of the database daemon? Is there any workaround, are there any
other reasons? I installed 2008 already and can use both word versions
without problems, but entourage 2008 crashes during start up.
Entourage 2004 still works flawless...

Mostly yes. That's something I woudl stay away from for that very
reason,

I guess you could do it if you are suing separate accounts, making sure
the daemon is not running before launching your version of Office, and
vice versa. It still is a disaster bound to happen :-\

You can use Entourage in different User accounts. You would have to quite
the Microsoft Database daemon if you were in separate User accounts. I have
3 versions of Entourage installed for my consulting business. Each is used
in their own User account.

Just to be clear. A User account is created in the Finder. An Identity is
created in Entourage.

Not to be too technical, Diane, but a User account is created in System
Preferences, not in the Finder. :)

The OP said he had reasons not to want separate User accounts, but I agree
with you that such accounts are the only true solution.

I know, just wanted to be clear this was outside of Entourage. I even have a
shortcut gtsp that types out "Go to System Preferences --> Create a New
User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User
Switching. Test Entourage there."

Adding to how I use different versions:

I have Office X, Office 2004 and Office 2008 installed. In my regular User I
have my account using Office 2008. When I receive Identities from older
version, I just use Fast User Switching to switch over and work on the
Identity and can switch back to be in my own user.

You can choose to install in the root Application folder or create a User
Application folder.

Obviously rebuilding really takes the CPU so I don't do much while I'm
rebuilding, but often I'm copying or exporting files and that can take up to
30+ minutes so I switch back and check my mail.

Hope this helps!
