Is it true you can't enter actuals with managed periods

Hi there,

I'm thinking about switchung vom non-managed to managed time periods.

Therefore I'm thinking about a PM entering actuals within the Project Client
for external ressources. (instead of the ressources entering it the PM does
it - because the ressources are offsore).

Is that as well possible with using managed timeperiods?

Best regards

When you switch to managed periods, the PM cannot enter actuals unless the
resources are local. Actual time has to be entered by team members using the
PWA timesheet. An alternative, if your resources are off-shore and will not
be using PWA, is to change your resources to a Project Server login instead
of a Windows Login. The PM can then log on as each resource and enter the
time. I am not sure why you want to switch to managed periods under the
circumstances. It introduces a level of pain, to say the least.

Hi Rick,

the main reason we want to switch to managed periods is that we us the
actuals - and therefore the costs - for controlling porposes. These actuals
are not allowed to change after the month.

Do you have a betteridea?

Hi Hans,
When you switch on the managed periods, you still can change the actuals in
the Project Plan, BUT if you save the Project schedule, Project Professional
askes to syncronise the actuals prodected with the actuals. As soon as you
say yes, you will loose all manually entered time. (If you say no, actuals
will remain as manually entered, but it is easy to say yes). Therefore I
would not recommend using managed periods if you want to manually enter
Actual Work.

I understand your concern about the controling factor and agree that this is
not the best solution build by Microsoft. You will need to "give a little to
take a little".
My suggestion:
- If you are using Managed period, dont change actuals ( unless it is a
local user)
- If you need to change actuals on the schedule, dont use managed period
Not sure if this helps, but this is as good as it gets I believe.

Hans,
just to clarify, as soon as you have managed periods, Project Server will
ask to to syncronise with Actual Work Protected, independendly of the
Resource Type ( local, global, generic).
It means that:
- If you are using Managed period, dont change actuals
- If you need to change actuals on the schedule, dont use managed period

Thanks
