Is it wise to install all hotfixes since SP1

P

Peter Dunn

We have MS Project Server 2007 with SP1. We have not installed any hotfixes
or the Infrastructure Update, but we are now planning to do so. I have read
through all hotfixes and in the main while we haven't experienced many of the
bugs explained in the hotfix, I can see that we potentially could experience
them in certain circumstances and we indeed still experience instablity in
certain areas from time to time which could well ber caused by bugs that are
fixed, so I am of a mind to simply install all fixes from Jan to the latest
in August (with the UI release as well) in that order.

Would people thinkl that this was a wise approach? We have a test system and
we would install all fixes there first to be tested before deploying to
production. Should we consider testing after each hotfix application or only
at the end of all hotfix aplications. Any gotchas to watch out for along the
way?

Thanks

Hi Peter, it is NOT wise to install all the hotfixes. Instead, install the
Instrastructure update (as these will have the hotfixes integrated into it
and tested for cross compatability). If you are still experience specific
issues after the IU, then investigate if any post UI hotifxes are applicable.

Hi Ben,

Thanks for your reply. Please excuse my ignorance but can I just clarify my
understanding of what you have said..

Do you mean that the IU contains 100% of all previously released hotfixes as
I wasn't under this impression as it says "This update does not replace a
previously released update" at the the end of its document.

Or do you mean that it contains only those hotfixes that just happened to be
in objects that are common to the IU'srelease? If this isthe case then we'd
have to compare object versions from all hotfixes prior to the IU with the
versions of the common objects in the IU release to know for sure whether
each hotfix was covered by the IU.

Peter

Hi Ben,

I have been trying to clarify this within Microsoft and they have been
struggling to confirm this themselves but they have sent me a URL to a blog
from one of their Senior Technical Product Manager in the US that seems to
suggest the way forward. That URL is
http://blogs.msdn.com/chrisfie/arch...date-for-project-and-project-server-2007.aspx
which seems to explain that the August Cumulative Update is the key and that
it together with the IU is the way to fully update the MS Project Server 2007
and related environments. They also gave me a blog URL to the IU material as
well being
http://blogs.msdn.com/chrisfie/arch...roject-server-2007-infrastructure-update.aspx .

So it seems that both together are the way to go and that this will bring in
all hotfixes previously released...well that's what I am assuming.

Any thoughts from you on this would be welcome.

Regards,
Peter
