Is MS sql server 6.5 way out of date or still usable with windows 2000?

Yes. SQL Server 6.5 Service Pack 5a is required to run SQL Server 6.5 on
Windows 2000 Server. See the How to Obtain SQL Server 6.5 Service Pack 5a
page on the Microsoft Product Support Services site for more information.
