Is office 2008 mdimporter broken?

Spotlight doesn't index pptx (PowerPoint) and xlsx (Excel) files. I tried
this on several machines.
Any idea whats going on here? I am using 12.0.2 office importer.

The importer for the XML formats is bad. I understand that we're waiting
for Apple to send us a new one.
