Yes it is. It is easier to install Office 97 if you have not installed
Service Pack 2 for Windows XP.

Can you expand on the issues one will encounter if Windows XP SP-2
is installed first?

IF you select the custom install option (I can't say about other
install methods as I never use them) and select the HTML options (which
I always do) it simply will not install. At all. No way. If you do
not select the HTML options it will install, it may or may not run and
it will for sure fail to update.

Fix: If you've installed SP2 just remove it, install Office97, make
sure ALL the updates on the MSFT site are installed and then re-install
SP2.

Office 97 will work just fine with SP2, it just won't install.

If you have XP with SP2 slipstreamed into it, you might search the
archives of this group for a workaround but be aware it did not work
for me.

Hi, Beth. The only way I could get Office 97 to install on WinXP SP2
was to choose a custom installation and set the Web Page Authoring
feature to "not available". If I didn't do that, sometimes the
installation would stop responding, and sometimes I'd get a "File
htmlmarq.ocx was unable to register itself with the system registry"
error.

Ah! That makes sense considering some of the Web components were
disabled. Guess I'll uninstall Office 97 and try this out.

Thanks for the info from both 'garfield' and 'XS11E'. :)

Many/most new desktop/laptops I've encountered in the past couple of weeks
have SP2 factory installed.

True and I don't know how Office 97 can be installed on those systems
unless it was installed separately, then it can be removed.

If you search this newsgroup, you'll find a method of installing Office
97 after installing SP2, it did NOT work on my computer as I said above
but maybe it will on others?

Other alternatives are to upgrade to a later version of Office or to
use OpenOffice. I've found that OfficeXP may sometimes be available
for a much lower price now that later versions are available and it
will install with SP2.

Office 2000 works too.

Office 2000 works too.

I haven't tried it but didn't someone here have to uninstall SP2 in
order to install Office 2000? I seem to recall reading that not long
after SP2 came out.

I am typing right this second on an XP Pro SP2 with Office 2000 installed on
it. YMMV.
