Is Project integrated with Outlook?

J

Joseph Chen

The MS Prooject facilitates the team communication through its own MS Project
Central server (see the MS help info below on the MS Office web site). MS
Outlook also has a Task pane for a list of tasks and allow people to update
the status of their tasks in Outlook. Why can't Project talk to Outlook
directly though the Exchange server to:

(1) Publish tasks assigned in Project in members' Outlook Task pane,
(2) Team member can update and send reply through the Outlook task management,
(3) Outlook publishes back the status to manager's project plan, and
(4) Manager gets immediate project status from the project plan updated by
the feedback from members' Outlooks?

To collaborate with your team, you can publish assignment (assignment: A
specific resource that is assigned to a particular task.) and project
information from Microsoft Office Project 2003 to Microsoft Office Project
Server 2003. Your team members can then view that information in Microsoft
Office Project Web Access 2003, the Web-based user interface they use to view
and work with Project Server 2003 (Project Server: A Project companion
product that enables collaborative planning and status reporting among
workgroup members, project managers, and other stakeholders by working with
and exchanging project information on a Web site.) information.

When team members update information about their assignments on Project
Server, the project manager can view and respond to this updated information
from Project or from Project Web Access 2003 and incorporate it into the
project schedule (schedule: The timing and sequence of tasks within a
project. A schedule consists mainly of tasks, task dependencies, durations,
constraints, and time-oriented project information.) in Project.

hi Joseph Chen,

When you use Microsoft Office Project Server 2003 to collaborate with your
team, your team members use Microsoft Office Project Web Access 2003 to view
and work with project data that you publish to Project Server 2003, such as
their task assignments. However, if they also have Microsoft Outlook
installed, they may prefer to work with their project tasks in Outlook
instead, where they already keep track of other tasks and appointments.

To easily transfer project tasks to Microsoft Outlook 2000 or later,
Microsoft Office Project Professional 2003 provides the Outlook Integration
Wizard. This Component Object Model (COM) add-in is downloadable from the
Tasks page in Project Web Access 2003. In the side pane, click View and
report on your tasks from your Outlook calendar. On the Work with Outlook
page, click Download Now to install the Outlook Integration Wizard COM
add-in.

After installing the wizard, it can be used in Outlook to import Project
Professional 2003 tasks from the Project Web Access timesheet to the Outlook
calendar, where they can be viewed alongside existing appointments. Once
tasks are imported in the Outlook calendar, progress on those tasks can be
reported to Project Server directly from Outlook.

I've downloaded the Outlook Integration module. After the installation and
one update, I am no longer able to connect to the Project Server through
Project Standard. I have to run the setup for Project and "repair" the
installation, which seems to essentially remove the Outlook Intergration
module. I'm running Project 2002 standard, Project 2003 Server, 2000 SQL
Server.

Hi Bruce ,

I think you need Project Professional to communicate with Project Server -
but I'm no expert on servers. Try posting on the server newsgroup. Please
see FAQ Item: 24. Project Newsgroups. FAQs, companion products and other
useful Project information can be seen at this web address:
