Is the bug"Word does not remember position of window" stillnot fixed?

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel It looks like I've got this problem and in searching this board I notice that its described as a known bug in 2008.

Can it be that after two years and so many upgrades that Microsoft still has not fixed this?

OK, its not a huge deal, but I would be most grateful if someone would recommend a work around.

The condition "still exists". But it's not a *Microsoft* bug

To be a bug according to Microsoft, they would have needed to DESIGN Word to
remember its window position. They didn't. Word has never been designed to
remember its window position, in any version, on any platform.

In formal computing, a "Defect" (a.k.a. "bug") is when the software does not
work as it was DESIGNED to do.

So it's a "Feature Request". From us. And it has not been granted. Which
you and I may consider to be a bug, but Microsoft doesn't.

Word is designed to store the zoom magnification of each document. That was
broken but has been fixed in 2008: make sure you have applied all your
updates.

Remember that to store a view zoom, you need to make a change to the
document then SAVE it with the new zoom setting.

Does the method of clicking on on the green button at very top of the
screen. Drag to desired position by use of Drag Box the clicking again
to go back to original position, then clicking again to go to to you
customized setting then closing the file work?

Well ok on the "bug" thing, I guess that's a matter of perspective.

What I do know is my version of Word (after running all the updates) definitely "remembers" a specific window size. Unfortunately, this ironclad template (which no amount of window resizing or saving seems to fix) is too long for my monitor. This means it shoots itself off the bottom of the screen.

I can fix that by clicking the green "resize" button, but the document never remembers it the next time I open it.

I've also had no luck resizing and saving the "normal" template.

Interestingly, Word 2008 WILL remember the size of a Word document that was generated on a different machine.

So back to the bug vs feature question: if this is a feature I can't imagine who would want it. I also can't imagine why MS wouldn't want to "fix" it either. I never had a problem with this with the old Word X version, and am therefore regretting the upgrade.

You may have a corrupt document there.

When a document corrupts, sometimes the default section break corrupts, and
that's what stores all the settings. When it corrupts, sometimes it goes
"read only" so Word then does not remember the zoom level.

Try a Maggie:

1. Create a new blank document
2. Carefully select all of the text in the bad document EXCEPT the last
paragraph mark
3. Copy it.
4. Paste in the new document.
5. Save under a new file name and close all, then re-open.

This technique for de-corrupting is known as "Doing a 'Maggie'", after
Margaret Secara from the TECHWR-L mailing list, who first publicised the
technique.

I like your thinking on this, but unfortunately the new document still shoots off the bottom of the page despite the fact that I followed the instructions and saved it with its proper settings.

But thanks for the ideas. At this point I'll try anything. This is a small point, but to be honest its driving me nuts.

Let me just clarify here...

When you say the new document "shoots off the bottom of the page" I am not
quite sure what you mean.

I have been trying to help you set that document zoom ratio so that when it
opens, you can always see the whole page (which presupposes that the zoom
will be less than 100 per cent, maybe quite a lot less, depending on what
paper size you have set...)

I am also assuming that you are using the "Page Layout" View setting. Of
course, in Draft View, the page does not HAVE a "bottom". It's an
unpaginated view, there are no "pages".

So please, describe the issue in a bit more detail. Maybe I have the wrong
end of the stick here...

Sorry, I should have said that the entire MS Word window shoots off the bottom of my monitor into my second monitor. In other words, I have two monitor, and they are set up so that the bottom of my main monitor connects to the top of my secondary one. The result is that Word 2008 consistently (and no matter what I do) opens all new .docx documents in that format. My old .doc documents however behave themselves.

Word has some "issues" with multiple monitors.

Make sure both Word and Mac OS X are right up-to-date. There are matching
fixes required in both. And you won't get it "perfect", particularly if you
have Spaces enabled.

I'm not using Spaces, and I've definitely got the most current versions of Word and OS 10.6.

Interestingly, an MS Word document produced by Word 2008 on my laptop respects the double monitors on my desk top machine.

Also, my Word documents in the old Word X .doc format have no trouble remembering their shape with the double monitors. I noticed that you mentioned that you're running 5 different versions of Word on your machine. If its feasible, I'm thinking of re-installing Word X and saving Word 2008 to deal solely with attachments in .docx (which is really the only reason why I upgraded).

Word X will give you “issues”.  It relies on Classic for bits of its functionality, and you don't have Classic in OS X
