I am traying to add quite a few number of gantt bars, yet the definition
table seems to be limitted to no more than 40 rows?

Any help will be appreciated.

I'm not exactly sure of the number, but I seem to recall it was around that
amount. What is your reason for needing more?

I need to reflect test environments in different world areas. After adding
all the variables, I know I'll need more than 40. I haven't been able to find
anything on this issue. Is there a work around?

Use text fields, outline codes etc. and then use grouping or filtering to
differentiate instead of bar styles. Any visual formatting is going to be a
problem when printed in black and white or when viewed by colorblind people.
Do you think that people will understand and remember what each of the 40
different styles means?

Each task may use 6 o 7 different custom bars, unique to that one task, so it
shouln't be so confusing in the end. However, given the limitation, I'll use
other wasy to reflect what I need.

Thanks for your help,
Raul.

RC,

From the GanttBarStyleEdit method help file entry:

=================================
Remarks
The Bar Styles dialog box can contain up to 40 style entries.
=================================

Hope that helps confirm what you've found.

Let's take a step back for a second and analyse the statement : "Each
task may use 6 o 7 different custom bars, unique to that one task, so
it shouln't be so confusing in the end. " :)

Do you really think that having 6 or 7 custom Gantt bar styles for each
task is NOT going to be confusing? :) I did a project for Boeing years
ago and they asked for about that number of Gantt styles per task and I
gave it to them. Nobody could figure it out. "If it is blue with hash
markes going up and down it means X but if the hash marks go left to
right it means Y except if the bar is green then it means C"

They ended up having to put text on the Gantt bars to distinguish them
apart. We had to abandon the use of colors and patterns as the key to
what the bars represented.

Just a thought from a similar project in the past...

I'm not an expert on this sort of stuff, but I'd think it is a decent rule
of thumb to assume that people can't remember more than 4 styles. Of course
sometimes it is useful to use more just to make a point that there are
"many" rather than few, but then the individual meaning of the color is less
important than the fact that there are many different points.
